Speed Badminton now extra sport in the repertoire!
The Eastbourne Campus of Brighton University has now taken up Speed Badminton for its students and graduates. Gary Stidder, Senior Lecturer and Tutor for the PGCE Course, was delighted with the outcome of the introduction of Speedminton to his post-graduate students. Gary explained that Speedminton fits in perfectly with the new curriculum, which is coming into action in September 2008. It gives future teachers an extra sport in their repertoire giving them an extra set of skills that can be taught to pupils. In the new curriculum teachers are challenged to introduce many new ideas and activities into PE lessons and to help develop pupils’ skills in sports such as how to “outwit an opponent.”
Gary explained to his students that they have more chances of getting a teaching position in schools, if they can offer new activities such as Speedminton. The students who were all highly talented individuals, loved Speedminton and were impressed how easy to learn, but how challenging the sport can be. Initially, the group were coached in all the basic techniques necessary to play the game, then they were given the opportunity to play each other on full size courts. Finally, a small tournament was held for the students with the winner Alex Moore receiving a Speedminton “Anytime, Anywhere” T-shirt.
"Speedminton is a fast and exciting game. It provides an alternative to traditional badminton and could be included within the new national curriculum for PE range and content of activities due for implementation into secondary schools in September 2008. The equipment is user-friendly and well worth the investment particularly as there are four hours of free coaching and it is extremely durable. It is something that all trainee PE teachers should be aware of and have some experience of playing and teaching."
